Many years ago in the mid-1950's in Hawaii we had a very beautiful tradition. The school children from every school in the territory would contribute a 24" croton lei to be laid at Punchbowl. I remember the neighborhood mothers would gather on our tiny porch and living room to string the croton leis. My grandfather who worked at the GN Wilcox Estate as a gardener had croton growing all over and they got trimmed to support this effort.
Update: Lei tradition lives on! Every Punchbowl Grave Gets Lei.
